Hello, I’m Sonoi, a 62-year-old cancer survivor living in Tokyo.
After battling breast cancer, undergoing multiple surgeries, and a long course of treatment, I returned to swimming this year for the first time in 38 years.
Swimming is both a form of rehabilitation and a way for me to regain my physical strength.
This summer, I won the 50m freestyle event at the Japanese Masters National Championship.
It was a wonderful experience.

But I was the only one using a cane, visibly facing health challenges.
I felt lonely and very sad.
In August next year, I will be participating in the World Aquatics Masters Championships – Singapore 2025 .
I am looking forward to connecting with others who have also overcome cancer and continue swimming, and I hope to meet them at the competition.
Next time, I’d like to share why I decided to return to swimming.
It would mean a lot to me to get to know others who have experienced similar pain and struggles.
Please cheer me on as I continue this journey!
I’d be thrilled if we could share our stories with each other.
